Umami, that mystical taste element. You’ve heard the name, maybe you’ve heard about it, but how do you create it? We’ll with seasonings and layers of flavor of course. The key is to capture all the senses of taste together in one bite, salty, sweet, bitter and acid. This burger embodies all that and more. Dive in and take on this Umami Adventure!
Ultimate Umami Burger
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1/3 C mayonnaise
1/4 C Umami seasoning
1 fresh lime
BBQ seasoning of choice to taste
1 red pepper
2 red onions
1 avocado
sliced muenster or swiss cheese
green leaf lettuce (optional)
4 brioche hamburger buns
Instructions:
1.Preheat grill to medium heat
2. In small bowl, mix together 1 TBL of Umami seasoning with mayo & a squeeze of fresh lime juice. Set aside and refrigerate.
3. Prep veggies: Thinly slice red pepper, onions, and avocado.
4. Roast red pepper with drizzle of olive oil in foil pan on grill or in oven until softened and takes on some color
5. Caramelize onions in skillet by cooking them down with olive oil over med heat until soft and translucent
6. In large bowl mix remaining 3 TBL Umami Seasoning with the ground beef. Add BBQ seasoning as desired.
7. Form 4 equally sized beef patties and press to approx 1 inch thickness, putting slight indentation in the center of each
8. Grill burger approx 3-4 minutes per side. Flip checking for nice golden brown color and grill marks without burning.
9. Melt a slice of cheese on each burger.
10. Check to be sure temperature reaches 160 degrees before pulling them off the grill.
11. While burgers are cooking, toast hamburger buns lightly to add texture and light grill marks.
12. Time to plate! Spread Umami seasoned mayo atop each bun half.
13. Layer from bottom bun up: sliced avocado, burger with melted cheese, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, leaf lettuce (optional), top with toasted bun
14. Enjoy with a side of waffle fries! Yummy
